If you love classic literature and you love a good puzzle, this one's for you.

I've put together a free PDF of ten cryptogram puzzles inspired by some of the most beloved literary voices in the English language — Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, and Arthur Conan Doyle. Whether you're a longtime puzzle enthusiast or you've never tried a cryptogram before, I think you're going to enjoy these.

And yes, it's completely free. Grab your copy right here.

What's a Cryptogram, Exactly?

A cryptogram is a short encrypted message where each letter has been swapped out for a different letter. Your job is to figure out the substitution pattern and decode the quote. Once you crack the cipher, the original words — clever, funny, wise, sometimes all three — reveal themselves.

It's genuinely satisfying in a way that's hard to describe until you experience it. That "aha!" moment when the phrase clicks into place? There's nothing quite like it.

Why Literary Quotes?

I wanted these puzzles to feel like more than just a brain workout. When the decoded message turns out to be a razor-sharp Austen observation about human nature, or a Shakespearean line you half-remember from school suddenly landing with new weight — that's a little gift on top of the puzzle itself.

The ten quotes in this pack were chosen because they're meaningful, memorable, and just the right length for a satisfying solve. Some will be familiar. Others might be new to you. All of them are worth the effort.

Who Are These Puzzles For?

These puzzles are a great fit if you:

  • Love classic literature and want a new way to engage with it

  • Enjoy word puzzles, logic puzzles, or brain teasers of any kind

  • Are looking for a quiet, screen-free activity for an afternoon

  • Want something thoughtful to share with a book club, a friend, or a fellow puzzle lover

  • Are a teacher or tutor looking for a low-prep enrichment activity

The difficulty level is accessible — you don't need to be a cryptogram expert to enjoy them — but they're not so easy that they feel like a pushover. Plan on spending a few comfortable minutes with each one.
